Welcome to the July 2009 issue of "Lyons Training 101," written by John Lyons Certified Trainer Keith Hosman.
Yes... July! I spent most of last month putting together my new downloadable book "How to Start a Horse" - so I'm a running a bit behind right now. You'll receive your real August issue in a week or two. Until then... what's up with lungeing?
It's a great training tool - but if you're simply using it to "tire out" your horse before riding... you're working at cross-purposes.
Done correctly, lunging can help (in part) teach your horse to "give to the bit," to see you as boss, to read your body language, to travel more upright and flexed... the list goes on. Done incorrectly, horses learn to pull on the bit, to speed up in response to your pressure, and can even go lame.
You'll find "How to Lunge Your Horse" sampled below. To read in its entirety or to print it out, follow the links provided. If they don't work or you're not getting the emails properly, see the bottom of this page.

Hang it in the barn for your pals, bring it along to pass the time at work - or send copies to your boarders with their next billing! Best suggestion yet: Collect the articles and put 'em in a binder. (It's a big file and will take a moment to appear on your screen after clicking that link.)

"The greatest training advice you'll receive from reading this material comes here in this first paragraph. Ready? It's this: Lungeing is for training, not for "tiring out" a horse. (I'll get to the "how to" in a paragraph or three but first the sermon.) Put briefly, lungeing is for folks who don't have access to a round pen. Word up: When you lunge a horse to "get the fresh out," do you know what's really happening? Your training is turning him into a bigger, stronger horse that can run even longer tomorrow. Remember how "Rocky" couldn't run up the stairs in the beginning without hacking up a lung – but just one montage later he's not only bolting to the top, but dancing around when he gets there? Like Sly, your horse will be more of a fighter after succeeding workouts, not less. He certainly won't be any "less scary" weeks from now when he can run for half an hour without breaking a sweat then turn to you, muscles rippling, with an "Is that all you got?" look on his face. Unless... unless you've used your time lungeing time to train his brain.
Working your horse at the end of a lunge line can offer great benefits, but you gotta use the time wisely...."

Here's an excerpt from a previous article called "Whoever Moves First Loses." If you think you've got a pushy horse - here's a great way to test him out - and correct pushiness you might find. It's a perfect companion piece to this month's work, as outlined above in "How to Lunge Horses."
"Does your horse bang impatiently on the stall at feeding time? Or lead poorly or bite or buck or kick out during a speed transition or drop his head to eat grass or forget you exist when whinnying to his buddies or "get cinchy" or act the fool for the farrier...? Does your horse see you more as servant than lord of the manor?
Or maybe you're looking for some effective training to do on a rainy day? Maybe something you can teach in a barn aisle when somebody else is using the arena?
For those of you who answered "aye," I'm going to describe a test and then a fix...."

Wanna Teach Round Penning?
My Downloadable Book "Round Pen First Steps" shows you what to do!
Here's a sample
from Day One:
"The round pen is not about running your horse into the ground. Use common sense and always err on the side of caution. Never, ever "tag team your horse," allowing another trainer to work the horse while you take a break. If you get a break, the horse gets a break. Period. End of story.
You'll want to offer the horse plenty of breaks, for "airing up," water, and to get out of the sun. True, we'll sometimes motivate the horse to find a specific answer by "getting his feet to move," but our job is to help the horse find the correct answer (and a break) sooner rather than later. The average horse is not going to be particularly keen to burn any more calories than he absolutely has to; we'll use that to our advantage...."
