"We have a 6yr old gelding who is EXTREMELY spooky"

Dear Keith...

Saturday, August 25, 2007

We have a 6yr old gelding (Lacola) who is EXTREMELY spooky. He is jumpy with everything from a sudden strange noises to different types of equipment to differnt ground textures such as gravel or concrete. He was not always like this, he used to be a solid horse. He'd only been green broke or was given the basic introductions to a variety of situations. Trailered, worn all tack (as an introduction only) lunged, walked around the yard. While doing all this we were able to use bags of cans with no emotion from him, use a tarp on him and on the ground again with no emotion, he was calm... curious... but calm. Until a friend attempted to ride him without permission a couple years ago. To explain what happened: She was told SEVERAL times not to attempt to ride him because he hadn't been trained properly yet, therefore was not ready to be ridden. She was insistant that all that needed to be done was throw a saddle on and ride him. One day while no one was home, she came over and put a saddle on him and proceded to mount. She made a drastic mistake in that she didn't cinch the saddle tight enough and it flipped under his belly. Which of course TOTALLY freaked him out. Now he is afraid of everything. So my question is this, what products, training classes are available to help get this horse back on track? He's fine in the pasture, he's the alfa of the herd. But the minute you open the gate to take him out of "his turf" he's instantly on edge and ready to bolt because of the slightest object or unexpected movement. He's very nervous, breathing heavy and snorting, all the while watching everything around him. All suggestions are GREATLY appreciated Thank you A
