"Do you do clinics at private barns?"

Dear Keith...

Monday, October 22, 2007

Hi my name is Karen and I live in Maryville, Tennessee. I am a volunteer in a program here called “Mane Support.” Mane Support is…horses healing human hearts. We are a non-profit organization that provides a ministry through the healing power of horses. Founded by Kim Henry, Mane Support provides participants with a nurturing environment where thoughts and feelings of grief and loss can be heard. Kim is certified through EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association). The counselors and equine specialists ensure safety while participants learn problem-solving techniques, communication skills, relationship building, confidence and self esteem ~ not from counselors, but from the different personalities and attributes of the horses. Mane Support reaches out to youth, teens, adults, individuals, families, and corporate groups. All sessions are conducted 100% on the ground, there is no riding involved. All sessions are conducted according to individual needs of the participants. Mane Support is the first equine assisted grief counseling program designed especially for people who have experienced: the death of someone they know, anticipation of a close friend or loved one or life changing events. My question is do you do clinics at private barns? How much do you charge for something like that? What is included, and last how would we go about scheduling one if you did do it? Looking forward to hearing from you. Karen

I do and would love to. In a nutshell, I charge riders $350 for the clinic, observers pay $20/day. I need a guarantee of 6 riders – though I max at 12 and would obviously prefer more rather than less. I give the coordinator (that’d be you or your organization) the 7th rider slot for free, theirs to use, barter or sell outright. I cover my travel expenses and don’t pay for use of arenas, etc. I also conduct a one-hour meet-and-greet/talk on Friday nights. No charge to anyone. I speak for an hour about “20 cool things I’ve learned about horses” and then take Q&A for an additional hour. (And on Saturdays I typically conduct a 2-hour mini-clinic for green or bratty horses. It’s all ground work, there is no riding, I max it out at 4 horses/owners and charge $175/horse. The horse owners are walked through the process of improving ground manners and bridle work from the ground.) If you’re interested, I can send all the boring details. Just let me know if you’d like the follow-up. Keith Hosman horsemanship101.com

Keith, Thank you for such a quick reply. As I told you this is a non-profit organization and I am a volunteer. I gather up all kind of information about different things I feel the organization could benefit from and present it to them. I am not sure if it is something they would do this year or perhaps the spring of next year. Is that a problem? I am new to this type of thing and they appear to be new also and a bit unorganized. Our first “Poker Run” earned us 0 dollars, not well thought through and planned on their behalf. In November we are planning a Trail Ride. I have input some ideas and am hoping this helps. With this one we are having food available (big deal in the south) and we are also providing door prizes. It has been interesting talking to people and explaining what we do and getting some great door prizes. I had hoped I could have gotten a saddle donation as a grand prize but….life is such. I do know that on the 10th of November they are having a Parelli person come out but I do not know all the details of that. I am personally a huge John Lyons and Clinton Anderson fan. I subscribe to John’s magazine and enjoy and learn from every article. I myself have a 12 year old Quarter Horse that my husband says is my “expensive lawn ornament.” The previous owners didn’t do anything with him and then I bought him. If I could have a dream it would be for this horse to be bomb proof and mind me instead of sometimes having a mind of his own. Now I know that is my problem because I must allow for something to happen for him to do that right? I am new at this so I take constructive criticism well as I am also not a perfect well let’s be honest here and say “not a very good rider.” I bought him actually hoping my daughter would take interest but no such luck. Do people hosting the clinic make anything from this program? To do that we would have to charge extra for something probably am I right? Being a non-profit organization I have to find out the details, sorry. I am thinking I could find 6 people that would be interested especially after the Trail Ride for which I am hoping for a big turnout. I also would like to hope for more. Anyhow, I guess I need to get the so called “boring” information sent to me and review it all. I will then talk it over with the group and if they think it is an awesome idea then I will get back in touch with you does that sound good? I already know that my own horse could benefit and I am pretty sure I have another friend who would be interested and even the owner of the barn. That is already 3 so I am half way there. I will hope to hear back from you and again thanks for your quick response. Karen R

My clinics are not structured in such a way that outside outfits can profit from them. If you’re seeing this as a money-maker for your group, I’m afraid it just doesn’t work that way. If you’re still interested, have your group look over the few details I’ve already sent – that’s the hurdle we need to cross. Beyond that, they’ll need a covered arena in which to conduct the clinic, but otherwise, everything else is just minutia. Regards, Keith
