Re: Ask a Horse Trainer

Let's see what we can stir up: Strap a halter on your horse and take a walk around the barn area. When you put the halter on, do you have to wrestle his head toward you or does the large muscle in his neck stay soft? Is he "just tolerating" you or is he standing politely? Be conscious of these things. Allowing these moments to compound is how we build monsters that chase us from the pen. If the little voice in you says "Hey,. I'm getting the cold shoulder" then do something about it. And, again, don't over-think this. It's just common sense. The change comes not so much from "how" you fix his thinking but "when" you fix it (right away). Do what it takes to get the horse to wake up and pay you the attention you're due (as the man or woman paying all the bills, for goodness sake). In these cases, it might be a matter of putting pressure on the lead till the horse relaxes his pull (away from you) then releasing and petting. Maybe it's a matter of clapping your hands and getting the horse to look at you with two eyes. Maybe the answer is to simply get the horse to practice backing up or disengaging his hips (by directing his head towards his hip).

Trailer Training Horses - Getting Terrific Reviews!

Great book, lots of info, worth its weight in gold!

I recently ordered your down loadable book on trailer loading, and I'm here to say it was the best 5 bucks I ever spent, it really works. If any one has a doubt about it have them holler at me.

Keith, I just have to tell you that I received your article,Trailer Training, for my 5 year old gelding, Paco. Trailer loading for him, previous to reading/practicing this article, was a dismal failure. He would not load his back feet or load and then run out as fast as possible. I used to walk in with him, beg, plead, push, pull, circle a million time till we were both dizzy, etc etc. to no avail.
After reading your article twice from front to back, I decided I would be “the fly”…I proceeded in the order suggested, ignored my urge to just jump to day 3, and became the “fly”. Did the groundwork first (at the walk, quietly) and each time he was “stuck”, acted as if I had all the time in the world, and IT WORKED!!! When loading before I always asked for everything at once, all I was focused on was GO IN, this time I really focused on the “try”, very very small efforts that I had previously overlooked, licking his lips, ¼” movement of his back feet, dropping his head…after he figured out what I wanted (okay with the help of some carrots), he self-loaded and I stood there IN SHOCK, outside the trailer watching him stand there like “so what’s the big deal!” We then proceeded to do it again and again….WHOO HOO, I AM “THE FLY”!!
I just want to thank you for your articles, they are very informative, funny, and helpful, and they work!!!
