Re: how do i deal with a bucking horse
If your horse went ballistic out on the trail last week... it didn't "just happen out of the blue." He's been telling you for weeks or months that he was going to lose it when enough pressure was applied every time he resisted (however slightly) the pull from your lead rope or reins.
If he walks ahead of you while you lead him, he's telling you that sooner or later he'll blow past you as you go through a gate or knock you on your kiester with his shoulder when something scares him bad enough.
If the muscles in his neck bulge toward you instead of relaxing when you put the bit in his mouth, he's telling you that he'll do mach sixty when he gets spooked on the trail.
Deal with these situations by doing two things: First establish a zero-tolerance policy; nip bad behavior in the bud the instant it happens. Example: If your horse inches past you as you lead, do an about-face and back that horse up. Keep him moving till he quits pushing back. (If he freezes pull on his head to pull his butt away from you. Getting those feet "unstuck" will allow you to keep backing till he lightens up.) Be adamant.
Second, get proactive. The first thing I do with any horse - and what I do each and everyday with all five of my own horses - is to see exactly where they stand when it comes to "resistance." Luckily the test and remedy are fun.
And having fun with this is a key point. Realize that every horse has resistance tucked away somewhere. Like an Easter egg, your job is to discover it. Instead of chocolate, your reward is a safer, more pleasant ride. The calmest, coolest, bestest trained horse you have ever seen has a little pocket of resistance hidden somewhere.
First I want to thank you for taking the time to provide access online to these wonderful techniques! And second I want to share with you a huge win that my horse and I had yesterday.
I am working off your 5 Day Stop Bucking program. I have been on day 1 and day 2 for a month. And the results are incredible. My horse was fearful and had not confidence until I was walking in front of her. Even though I have had her for a year and this summer we rode several long rides by ourself into the mountains, she still has little fear devils that take over her brain. Anyway, after she bucked me off the second time I started working your program.
I can say with confidence that I now know how to 'ride out' a buck or even a potential buck. And she is coming to me in the pasture. And she is lowering her head with less hesitation for the bridle (she has no problem at all with the rope halter).
But the huge win for us is that she now stands when I mount and doesn't move forward until I ask her too. She also halts with the slighest raising of the rein. She would really get terrified if I wanted her to leave the ranch. So I worked in baby steps for a month and finally yesterday as we neared the gate, she was calm, her head was down and we just kept going and had a wonderful (short) ride!!
This is just a miracle. I wouldn't of been able to do it without your guidance. Thank you so much for sharing your gift online!!

Thanks, Keith
I purchased your ebook about STOP BUCKING a few months ago. It has been a BIBLE for me to work thru some missed training on my mare who on select occasions she chooses to offer to buck. Mostly when she is in a group of horses and she is not leading. (this was a hit and miss behavior). 90% of the time she is golden, the other 10% she has a tantrum. I started DREADING group rides. I am more confident and comfortable riding by myself then in a group of horses with my mare. (most people have just the opposite problem)
I have spent a few months on arena work practicing your techniques...then I made a small environmental change and tried your techniques out on the trail BY MYSELF. She did many many of them well, but also took a few steps backward such when I went to disengage her hind quarters, she would circle almost endlessly instead of stopping on a dime like she did in the arena. (because the emotional level changed on the trail)...and I realized she hadn't fully learned the lesson in the arena. So we went back to a smaller step change...which was outside the arena in the yard. Moving her furniture a little more slowly (as you recommended) has worked wonders. After I did your steps in the yard outside the arena with as much success as in the arena,... I took her back out on the trail by herself and practiced them there. When I felt she was listening and learning by herself, I asked a friend (just one) to ride with me and I have been practicing the techniques with just ONE other horse on the trail with us. We're making progress with one other horse and in fact, I was able to have the other horse leave her sight and I was able to take her the other direction with no tantrum at all. All by practicing the techniques consistently, and SLOWLY moving up the level of emotional excitement for her.
I'm not ready for group rides yet, because I want to make sure she is doing what I ask in the presence of one other horse. Next year, I will ask for two (2) other horses & riders to ride with me and see how that goes. I'll eventually get that old recliner of hers into the trash.
Most importantly, I've taken your advice that I enjoy and love this animal - and while trail riding & endurance racing is my passion--- just being able to work with her step by step is another way of enjoying and spending time with her. Picture attached.
I look forward to getting the reins and playing with a new , better method of communication. Thank you.
